In this episode we discuss…

  • using a “hunger meter” to tune into your body’s hunger and fullness cues

  • how to prevent your child’s first diet (a major risk factor for development of disordered eating)

  • using, modeling, and teaching “embodied language” around food

  • signe’s experiences using the hunger meter and embodied language with her daughter

  • the benefits of avoiding making food choices “from the chin up”

  • the definition of connected eating and how it is different from dieting

  • why eating when you’re not hungry shouldn’t be demonized

  • why making food equal in availability and in morality for children is so important

  • examples of what equal availability for food can look like

  • using the 3 T’s - texture, temperature, and taste - to guide food choices

  • What parents can do if they’re struggling themselves with connected eating

Therapist and eating disorder specialist Signe Darpinian joins us to discuss how the home environment can promote connected eating and protect against the development of disordered eating for children. She draws on research from her recent book, her clinical work, and her experience raising her own daughter to offer practical suggestions for helping young people develop healthy relationships with food.
